Third Place for GUST Men’s Basketball in CUBA (Sunshine Group)
June 28th was the last day for the Second CUBA (Chinese University Basketball Association) finals. At 2:00 pm, the competition between GUST team (Guangdong University of Science and Technology)and CQUPT team (Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications) came to a start, fighting for the third place in this national competition.
During the whole competition, all GUST players played pretty well. They fully utilized their strong interior defense to initiate shots and earned 17 points more than the other team in the first section.
At the end, they initiated further attack to win the third place in CUBA (Sunshine Group) finals with the score being 87:68, creating a glorious historic moment for GUST as well as Dongguan and even the whole Guangdong Province.

Competition Review: Typical GUST-Style “Basketball”
At the beginning of the competition, our team took firm defense and initiated fierce attack to make the score 9:2, and then CQUPT team gained 4 points and dragged close the score. After that, both teams made mistakes continuously and then CQUPT team got the lead by 14:10 with jump shots, free throws and a double pump.
After “Five Ups an Downs”, our player Meipeng Lin got a“2+1”point shots and No. 10 player Junkang Cai initiated a layup, making the score a tie by 15:15, then CQUPT team asked for a suspend. When they were back, our payer Junkang Cai made a rebound and assisted No. 15 player Yuxi Li to get scoring. Afterward, No. 7 player Chen Li made a three-point shot which was a buzzer beater for us---the third successive buzzer beater of GUST. By the end of the first quarter, our team got 7 points in the lead by making the score 22:15.
For the second quarter, our substitutes entered the field to fight with our opponents. Both teams initiated several attacks towards each other’s inside and 7 points difference almost continued for half quarter.During the second half of this quarter,, GUST team sent back the “Five Tiger players”. Yaode Luo got scoring by the moment he entered the field and then Huanrui Chen got a free throw and scoring, helping GUST team smash the CQUPT team by 15 points within 2 minutes. And then during the second round of the attack, our No. 12 player Ziquan Li assisted No. 21 player Huanrui Chen to make 5 block shots, directly declaring our inside to be the “forbidden area”.
When the clock ticked to 3 minutes and 30 seconds, our player Qifan Zhang got a three-point shot at the left corner and a layup followed, making the score difference be about 20 point, afterwards, Yaode Luo and Qifan Zhang performed a give and go strategy during the fast break and make our team smash CQUPT team by 17 points by the end of the second quarter with the score being 45:28.
During the third quarter, CQUPT team strengthened their defense and so did our team. Our NO. 9 player Yaode Luo adopted pick and roll to make a layup and a “2+1”point shot while NO. 15 player Meipeng Lin also got s nice shot, making our team in the lead by 21 points.
During the second half of this quarter, the CQUPT team recovered much of their strength and utilized strong defense to initiate attacks successively, meanwhile, two great inside players of our team performed excellent defensive skills to prevent the score from being reduced. Afterward, our player Yaode Luo once again performed his “2+1”point shot, and then both teams initiated attacking model and made some nice shots. By the end of this quarter, CQUPT team dragged the score closer by 49:64, our team was still in the lead by 15 points.
For the last quarter, our team strengthened their attack with our No. 12 player performing a “2+1”point shot and No. 17 player Zefan Lin making a nice three-point shot, the other team also made some shots and got scoring, but the score difference still remained to be about 20 points. At the beginning of the second half of the last quarter, our No. 13 player Qifan Zhang made a three-point shot once again at the left corner, and our team got another three-point shot and then No.10 player Junkang Cai initiated fast break and assisted Qifan Zhang to make another shot, making the winner no suspense.
Finally, our team beat the CQUPT team by 19 points with the score being 87:68, putting our journey to the CUBA (Sunshine Group) to a great end.
